What Drives the Cost of Permanent Holiday Lighting? (Pricing Factors Explained)

Permanent lighting quotes can range from $1,000 to $14,500 for the same neighborhood (try the slider on our pricing page for your home). The reason isn't markup — it's that five real cost factors vary house to house. Here's what to look at on any quote you receive.

1. Linear footage of roofline. The single biggest driver. A typical 200-ft roofline runs different from a 400-ft estate. Bulbs are spaced every 3-4 inches, so footage scales linearly with material cost.

2. Story height. Two-story installs require taller ladders, longer setup times, and a second crew member for safety. Expect roughly 25-40% more labor versus a single-story install of the same length.

3. Soffit depth and channel routing. Deep soffits, multiple gables, dormers, and turret roofs add hours of channel-bending and clean wire routing. Simple ranch-style rooflines are the fastest to install.

4. Power and controller location. Homes with no convenient outdoor outlet near the install path may need a licensed electrician to add a dedicated GFCI circuit. Budget $250-$600 for that scope.

5. Accent zones and add-ons. Tree uplighting, pathway lighting, garage outlines, and architectural facade lighting are priced as separate zones. Most homeowners add at least one accent zone for the full effect.

Avoid quotes that lump everything into one number. Reputable installers itemize roofline, accent zones, controller, and electrical so you can compare apples to apples.
